Teaching Experience

This part is the main core of this project – teaching. I’m not from education college in my university, but rather I’m from faculty of social science and political science. It makes me afraid and not confident to teach, but my friends, who are also participants from this project ever said, “everyone is a teacher” this quote always calms me every time I feel nervous and not fit with this project.

So let’s start!

I did my practice teaching on august 20, 22, and 27. I should’ve teach 5 days, but there was so many interruptions, such as typhoon .August 20th 2019 is my first time teaching, I felt really nervous and freezed! This is my very first time teaching in my life. But, thank god I could pass the day 1, I taught 3 classes today. The students are really kind and charm, they were really focus and listen to the lessons. They were really supportive to me!. I made a presentation the night before, but there is no projector in the class, and there’s no vacant projector …. So I handle it with hung my laptop with my hand, and walking to each students hahahah, really memorable. It made me uncomfortable and more nervous. But, I saw the students’faces, their expression were like motivated me and really supportive. Sir Jomar gave me an advice to stay calm during teaching, he said “just relax, the students won’t bite you!”.

On august 22nd is my second time teaching. Today sir Jomar didn’t accompany me because he was sick. At the first class I taught in the school lobby, because DMMMSU MLUC was under renovation, so the class was still tentative. We played a quiz at the end of the class, the students were really excited during the quiz!

And now, jump to the final demonstration teaching. My final demo held on Wednesday, August 4 2019. I started the class with teaching an Indonesian songs, it’s called “kepala, pundak, lutut, kaki”. The students were really excited with this song! My topic for today is Anthropology. I applied “Student Learning Center”, so I gave them instruction to do research at the class and present the research in front of the class. I asked the to research about another culture in another country. My final demo teaching went good and smooth haha, I don’t feel much nervous. It was a memorable experiences that I will never forget. I ended the class with

Observations

I was asked which level I’d like to choose, first, I choose junior highschool. Unfortunately, on Junior Highschool the textbook uses tagalog words. So, they offer me to teach on High School with English textbook. The curriculum of the textbook is K-12.

There was no observation on august 13 and 14 because there was still orientation day for the students. I started my first observation on August 15, today also the first day I met my mentor, he is sir Jomar Avenna. I observed the way he taught the class, but since today is the first day of the class, the activity is only self-introduction to the students, after that he gave an assignment to the students, the students asked to do research about scientist of social science.  Sir Jomar told me about the teaching method that he use, it’s student centered learning, this methods focuses the teaching on the students, where the teacher becomes a “facilitator” for the students.

I observed 3 clases today, I was really degdegan aka nervous, there were 55 students in a class. Never imagine before I would teach in front of 55 students in a class haha. On August 16, I did my second and last observation, today’s activity was the student presented their assignment. They presented really good, but some of them still seems unconfident, but that’s okay! Haha. Sir jomar did his part as the facilitator of the class, at the end of the class di told the student to be more confident, so they could “understand the topik, and they don’t have to memerize the whole topic, words per words.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony was held on August 13 2019. First, we attended the flag ceremony at DMMMSU NLUC. I was really excited to attend the flag ceremony! The entire DMMMSU academic community was present at the ceremony.  Were introduced by ma’am anny rose one by one. I was amazed, they played ASEAN anthem, (ASEAN Way) during the flag ceremony, it was something that really rare in Indonesian school.

After the flag ceremony, we are accompanied to DMMMSU president office. The president of DMMMSU welcomed us in his room, we were really welcomed there. Also, we introduced ourself on by one too there.

After that we were accompanied to DMMMSU MLUC by our lovely coordinator, Ma’am Therese Palapac (I don’t know how to write her name correctly), she is the one who always take care of us in MLUC, thank you ma’am Therese!

On the next week, there was a “second” opening ceremony to welcome another SEA Teacher and SEA TVET Participants (But, it’s not the second for them haha)

But after they recognized I’m not a Philipiino, they became very nice and welcome to me!

Had lunch at “Mang Inasal” Manila

Mr Mark and Ma’am Estella (DMMMSU Reseprentative) picked us up from the airport and they accompanied to Bacnotan, La Union. They are really nice and welcome for us! After 6 hours trip, We finnaly  arrived at BPS Hostel, Sapilang, Bacnotan, La Union on Sunday, August 11 2019. I arrived at 3am… so it’s time to sleep.

About SEA Teacher and DMMMSU

SEA Teacher or Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia is a program initiated by the Southeast Asian Ministry of Education Organization (SEAMEO). This program aims to provide opportunities for Southeast Asian students to have teaching experience in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia. The school and destination country of the participants will be determined by SEAMEO, so participants cannot choose which countries they want to visit. SEAMEO put me at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), Philippines.

DMMMSU is located in La Union Province. Briefly, DMMMSU is the largest Campus that I’ve ever seen, it has 3 large campuses, a silk warm farm, a mountain, a river, a BEACH, and many more (because I haven’t discovered all of part of DMMMSU haha). As I mentined before, DMMMSU has 3 Campuses, which are DMMMSU-North La Union Campus (NLUC), DMMMSU-Middle La Union Campus (MLUC), DMMMSU-South La Union Campus (SLUC). Every DMMMSU campus has laboratory school inside. I teach at DMMMSU MLUC Laboratory High School. It’s located in the City of San Fernando, the capital city of La Union. BUT, I stay at BPS Hostel, which is located at DMMMSU NLUC. I commute an hour everyday, thank you to DMMMSU that provide us a van everyday!
